Federal Pacific Electric Company (FPE) panels are commonly found in homes built from the 1950s to 1980s. The problem with FPE panels is that one in four Stab-Lok breakers in an FPE panel will not properly trip. The breakers inside the panel are designed to protect your home from serious electrical problems by preventing circuit overload, short circuits and outside power surges affecting the panel.
When an overload occurs, a breaker trips and stops power to the circuit. In the case of Federal Pacific panel boxes, the breakers may fail to trip creating a real threat of fire.
When a breaker fails to trip, a huge amount of power surges from the outside electrical supply and into a homes electrical panel and circuits. Once the surge occurs, it cannot be shut off manually. The electricity will burn until it runs out of fuel or the wires melt, possibly overheating and catching fire, causing serious damage to the home.
Most insurance companies have blacklisted this type of panel and will require you to replace it to be insured or pay a higher premium. You may also have an issue when refinancing or selling or buying a home with a FPE panel.

With any panel, serious problems that require IMMEDIATE attention include:
• panel surface is warm to the touch,
• an unusual odor around the panel,
• a crackling or buzzing sound,
• visible arcing or sparks,
• visible charring or melting.
If you detect any of these symptoms, immediately turn off the flow of electricity to the affected breaker, or turn off the entire panel by switching the main breaker OFF.
